Critical Access Hospitals

Although the Critical Access Hospital (CAH) reimbursement is not based on a prospective payment system (PPS), CAH facilities are still obligated to accurately report procedure codes for the services that they provide. In the future, CAHs are expected to be subject to a PPS-like reimbursement system. For this reason, it is prudent for CAH facilities to implement a phased system for updating and accurately maintaining their chargemasters.

This is also an excellent time to update staff members in appropriate coding techniques.
Services provided to Critical Access Hospitals may be at the Silver, Gold Level, or Platinum Level depending upon the facility’s needs. ChargemasterCare™ will conduct a preliminary evaluation of the CDM and will advise the hospital regarding the appropriate level of service that is required.

Services to CAHs include:

  • Periodic updates as changes are published
  • Full coding support to facility staff
  • Terminal services as needed by the facility
  • Support to the facility compliance committee representatives as required
